How to Choose the Right Porcelain Tiles for Your Home or Building Project in Nigeria

Choosing tiles is one of the decisions people most often rush and most often regret. Tiles are a long-term finish: they shape how a space looks, how it feels underfoot and how much maintenance it needs for years. This guide walks through what actually matters when selecting porcelain tiles for a home, a development or a commercial fit-out in Nigeria.

Start with the project, not the tile

It is tempting to begin with a photo of a beautiful floor. A better starting point is a clear description of the project: what is being built or renovated, which spaces are being tiled, how the spaces will be used, and when the tiles are needed on site. Almost every other decision — size, finish, colour, quantity — follows from that.

What to consider before choosing tiles

The type of project

A private home, a block of apartments for rent, a short-let, a school, a showroom and a restaurant all place different demands on a floor. Owner-occupied homes usually allow more freedom in design. Rentals and commercial spaces tend to favour finishes that are easy to clean, easy to match later and forgiving of heavy use.

Where the tile will be used

Consider each area separately: living areas, bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, stairs, balconies, terraces, car ports and external walkways. Wet areas and outdoor areas usually call for surfaces with more grip, while walls can carry finishes that would be unsuitable underfoot.

Tile size

Larger formats mean fewer grout lines and a calmer, more continuous surface, which suits open-plan living areas and lobbies. Smaller formats are easier to handle, cut and work around fittings, and often make more sense in compact bathrooms or spaces with many corners. Large formats also need a well-prepared, level substrate and an experienced installer.

Finish

Polished surfaces reflect light and read as more formal. Matte and honed finishes are quieter, show fewer marks and are generally preferred where slip resistance matters. Satin and textured surfaces sit between the two. Whatever the look, confirm the finish of the specific product against the area you intend to use it in rather than relying on the category name.

Colour and design

Light tones make rooms feel larger and brighter; deeper tones anchor a space and hide marks differently. Marble-look surfaces suit formal interiors, wood-look planks add warmth, and concrete or stone-look surfaces suit understated, contemporary schemes. You can compare these families across our tile collections and view individual faces in the product range.

Traffic levels

Be honest about footfall. A guest bathroom, a family kitchen, a stairwell in a rented block and a retail entrance are very different environments. Higher-traffic areas benefit from finishes that disguise everyday wear and are simple to clean.

Durability and suitability

Durability is not one number — it depends on the product and the way it is used. Rather than assuming a whole category behaves the same way, ask for the specification of the actual product you are considering and check that it is intended for your application. Our article on porcelain versus ceramic tiles explains where each type is typically used.

Quantities, cutting and wastage

Quantity requirements

Measure each area and work in square metres, area by area, rather than estimating the whole building at once. Keep floors, walls, skirting and any feature areas separate so quantities can be checked against the tile chosen for each.

Cutting and wastage

Every job produces cuts around walls, doorways, columns and fittings, and diagonal or patterned layouts produce more. Allow a sensible margin above the measured area, and consider keeping a small reserve for future repairs. Our guide to buying tiles for a building project covers quantity planning and phased supply in more detail.

Consistency across tile batches

Tiles are produced in batches, and shade or pattern can vary slightly between production runs. Where a single continuous area is being tiled, it is better to secure the full quantity at once than to return later for a top-up. If a project is phased, tell your supplier at the outset so the requirement can be planned.

Budget and long-term value

Tiles are only part of the cost: adhesive, grout, trims, labour and site preparation all matter, and a cheaper tile that needs replacing or is difficult to match later rarely saves money. Set a realistic budget per area — you may choose a more expressive surface for living areas and something simpler for utility spaces.

Questions to ask before purchasing

  • Is this product suitable for the area I intend to use it in — floor, wall, wet area or outdoors?
  • What sizes and finishes is it available in?
  • What is the current availability, and can the full quantity be supplied at once?
  • How much should I allow for cuts and wastage on my layout?
  • Can I see a physical sample or mockup before deciding?
  • If I need more later, how should I plan for batch variation?
  • What care and cleaning does this surface need?

Why understanding the project matters first

When the project is clearly understood, tile selection becomes straightforward: the requirements narrow the options, and the remaining choice is about design. That is the way we prefer to work at Glizers — you can read more about how we work or read our tile maintenance guidance once your selection is made.
